Book Summary

She was an innocent lass...

One moment lovely Prudence Walker was living the life of a dutiful orphan; the next she was lying in a highwaymans arms. Wounded in a foiled robbery attempt and thoroughly drenched from a storm, the dreaded Scot bandit seemed harmless enough. Or so Prudence thought—until the infamous rogue stole her breath and her will with his honeyed kisses, until she felt the rapier-sharp edge of his sensuous charm.

Who haunted a highwaymans dreams...

She was everything Sebastian Kerr had ever wanted, but could never have: an impish beauty with amethyst eyes and wine-sweet lips he longed to plunder. But even as he drew Prudence into his embrace, he knew he must leave her. For the gray-eyed highwayman was leading a dangerous double life—one that left no room for love.

In a land of heather and velvet...

The courageous beauty and her sensuous outlaw ignite fires of passion that blaze from the storm-swept English countryside to the wild moors of Scotland...forging unbreakable bonds of love.

The first out-and-out romance novel I ever read, I picked it up for 50c in the library cast-offs bin, and luckily it didn't have this cover shown on it or I'd have been too embarrassed to buy it.

Well, what a ride! If only all romance novels were at least this good. It is an unlikely tale, faintly ridiculous in parts and terribly ridiculous in others, but in a way that had me laughing out loud an only occasionally moaning with pain. There are some super-hot scenes in this book as well as toe-curlingly embarrassing ones, and it rips along at a fair pace, never letting the action stagnate in one setting too long. The relationship is dynamic too, as well as the roles they play, as the actions and circumstances of the characters mess up their lives.

    SPOILERS:

Prudence is pretty trope - the sexy librarian basically, but in a baroque gown. She is a strong willed girl who finds herself forced on the mercy of a relative, but of course she isn't that strong willed or there would be no story. Sebastian is motivated by pride, and for most of the novel that means he'll do anything to get his hands on more money. Take all chance of monetary gain out of a situation and he's got a soft heart after all, and that's Prudence's first impression of him. He's got damaged-bad-boy syndrome, thinking he's no good and deciding that he has no heart to betray and no morals to upkeep, so he acts like an arse for most of the book. Prudence of course, through circumstances beyond her control (except for when she can't resist a bit of shit-stirring with Sebastian), sticks close enough to him throughout the book, that she eventually gets to the well of pain at the bottom of his tortured soul, Lucky for her and us, because otherwise she has no justification for sticking around a guy who otherwise comes off as a shallow, mercenary bully. I like how Pru is cleverer than he is, but sometimes he just is QUITE dense.

The ending is silly, and the historical grounding feels weak, but that is not why one reads such books.
